EThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba officially opened Westown Square, the first phase of the ‘New City of the West’ on 27 March. This catalytic project is located in Shongweni.
Westown Square is the first phase for further mixed-use development and investment in the region. It includes a residential estate, hospital, business and commercial parks, and more.
It is set to generate R15-billion in investment over the next 10 to 15 years, creating approximately 15 000 construction jobs and 8 500 permanent jobs.

This catalytic project is supported by eThekwini Municipality, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, and national government.
Fundamentum Property Group invested R1.5-billion in the development of Westown Square, while the City’s contributions for bulk infrastructure amounted to R600-million over three years.
Thousands of jobs have been created and are still to be created in this area, changing the socioeconomic profile of communities living in the area.
The project serves as an indication of what can be achieved when government works together with the private sector.
Westown is perfectly positioned between Durban and Pietermaritzburg on the main arterial N3 highway. Its location is poised to enhance the regional offering with a shopping, lifestyle, entertainment, and business destination.

The development of Westown was facilitated by eThekwini Municipality’s Catalytic Projects Unit. The unit is responsible for facilitating large-scale spatial transformation projects in partnership with the private sector.
The investment value for these projects is usually more than R500-million, with the projects contributing substantially to job creation and economic growth in the region.
